KEN KANEKI

Tokyo Ghoul by Sui Ishida

MORE ABOUT KEN

The predicament of a main character wanting nothing to do with being the main character of the story they are in is one of my favorite tropes used in media — I feel like it could qualify as a genre at this point and I'm just obsessed with it! I will forever enjoy anime and manga like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Mob Psycho 100, and Berserk (1997), and the Tokyo Ghoul manga is no exception. When I met Ken and dove into the bizarre and intriguing visuals Sui Ishida developed for his Tokyo, I knew it was only a matter of time before I would find something of his I wanted to cosplay. And I knew the second I saw the Aogiri outfit that I would have to make it.

This costume can be pretty much be summed up with the phrase "baby's first bodysuit" as this was quite literally the first bodysuit I ever drafted and sewed myself. I can also say in all honesty that it really, really looks like it. This costume was pretty much drafted like a regular torso and pant sloper and just sewn together at the hip line. It features early attempts of mine at cut outs and inset appliqués, and shows off my first ever attempt using stretch vinyl. All in all it's a mess of a costume, but at the time I was so proud to have tried something like this, and looking back on it I'm proud of how much I learned while creating this costume and how far I have come since then. I do hope to remake this outfit one day but for now here's to new challenges and to "baby's first bodysuit."
