GAMZEE MAKARA

Homestuck by Andrew Hussie

MORE ABOUT GAMZEE

This is one of my oldest, and barely, surviving costumes. The majority of my early costumes were simply modified T-shirts and they haven't stood the test of time very well (and also me wearing them over and over again each week literally just to high school). Initially I wasn't going to acknowledge this costume on this website, however when I considered how long a that one photo of me in this cosplay has been my profile picture, I thought it might be worth the mention. So here it is — my Sober! Gamzee Makara cosplay.

Homestuck is a very important webcomic to me as it was effectively an epic that I read in my formative years and definitely left an impression on me, and as the Boston!stuck community was essentially what kept me in the cosplay community after my first incredibly overwhelming convention experiences. And the character, although not one I would want to meet ever in real life, has intrigued me for years now. He is very well written and I see him as such an important commentary on how people are both products of their home life and upbringing as well as products of society. His character arc displays openly how society itself desperately needs to change to create better people yet at the same time individuals must be held accountable for their actions even though they are a product of this. It's an uncomfortable subject and there's not really an easy path forward considering the systemic issues of our world, but it's an important one to recognize and discuss. Even years later, I'm really glad that I got to bring this to light in my own way by cosplaying Gamzee Makara, one of Homestuck's most hated and beloved characters.

This costume is made mostly from modified garments — a painted T-shirt, painted sweatpants, and painted shoes. I also made horns from Model Magic, wore official Terezi Pyrope boxers, and used a massive amount of Mehron body make up to complete this look.
