KEN KANEKI

Based on the character and Aogiri outfit he wears from the hit manga Tokyo Ghoul, by Sui Ishida, and anime series of the same name, directed by Shuuhei Morita.

MORE ABOUT KEN

The concept of a main character wanting nothing to do with being a main character is one of my favorite predicaments used in media today — like if this qualifies as a genre, I am obsessed with it! I will forever enjoy shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Mob Psycho 100, and Berserk (1997), so when I saw Ken's Aogiri outfit in Tokyo Ghoul, which combined this tragic concept with bizarre and intriguing costume design, I knew I would have to make it.

This costume can be pretty much be summed up with the phrase "baby's first bodysuit" as this was in fact the first bodysuit I ever drafted and sewed myself, and I can say in all honesty that especially up close it really, really looks like it. This costume was pretty much drafted like a regular torso and pant sloper and just sewn together at the hip line. It features my first ever cut outs and inset appliqués. It also shows off my first ever use of stretch vinyl. All in all it's a mess of a costume, but at the time I was so proud I was able to even attempt to create something like this, and today I'm proud of how much I learned while creating this costume and how far I have come since then. I do hope to remake this outfit one day but for now here's to new challenges and to "baby's first bodysuit."
