GAMZEE MAKARA
Based on the sober version of the character from the webcomic Homestuck created by Andrew Hussie.
MORE ABOUT GAMZEE
So. This is one of my oldest surviving costumes. Most of my first costumes were modified T-shirts and those, unlike my early sewing projects, haven't stood the test of time (and me wearing them over and over again each week literally to highschool) very well. Initially I wasn't going to acknowledge this costume on this website, however when I considered how long a that one photo of me in this cosplay has been my profile picture, I thought it might be worth the mention. So here it is—my Sober! Gamzee Makara cosplay.
Homestuck is a very important webcomic to me as the Boston!stuck community was essentially what kept me in the cosplay community after feeling incredibly overwhelmed and out of place after my first couple convention experiences. And the character, although not one I would want to meet ever in real life, has intrigued me for years now. He is very well written and I see him as such an important commentary on how people are products of society and their upbringing, and how society itself needs to change to create better people yet at the same time individuals must be held accountable for their actions even though they are a product of this. It's an uncomfortable subject with no easy solutions to just throw into place, but it's an important one to recognize and discuss. And I'm really glad that I got to bring it to light in my own way by cosplaying Gamzee Makara.
This costume is made mostly from modified garments — a painted T-shirt, painted sweatpants, and painted shoes. I also made horns from Model Magic, wore official Terezi Pyrope boxers, and used a massive amount of Mehron body make up to complete this look.
